Do you feel overwhelmed by where to start decluttering or find the motivation to declutter? Your every day life seems like it just takes over any free time you have? Or maybe your 9-5 job exhausts you out and you feel like you don’t have the energy to do anything else?
Well don’t worry, I have 6 tips to help you get motivated and start decluttering. There are a few things you can do to ease your mindset into the decluttering task at hand but also get rid of that overwhelming feeling too.
Let’s get into these tips so you can use these to get motivated!
TIP ONE
Do a quick plan of which area or room you want to tackle first. Take it slow and chose a small area so you don’t get stressed or overwhelmed by the task at hand. Give yourself these 10 minutes to get into the mindset of; ‘I will declutter so and so area and I will start from here and end here’. I will go through this and this and check this and that.
This is a very quick and easy task to do to help you understand the task at had and the end goal which is decluttering.
It doesn’t have to be perfect but you do need to give yourself these few minutes to prepare mentally to start decluttering.

TIP TWO
Think about why you are doing this. Why is it important to pair down and get rid of stuff? What is your end goal? Think about your future and this end goal.
Write your goals down or make a vision board. Some people prefer to make vision boards to help them visualise their end goal which helps them see it all the time. This may be a good idea for you to have on hand as a reminder of why you are doing this and what your end goal is. Find a way to remind yourself about why you are doing this.
If your why is to have more time to relax then this is a great opportunity to tackle the room in which you wish to relax in. If this is your living room or your bedroom then start there. Don’t forget to visualise what you want your room to end up looking and then get started. This way once you are done you will see the immediate results and boost your confidence and motivation to continue with other areas of your home.
TIP THREE
This tip was what helped me start getting motivated to do regular decluttering sessions and this tip is about writing a list of the benefits of decluttering. Your usual benefits will be less stress, les overwhelm, more time etc. But I want you to go deeper. Write a more detailed list, for example:
- Less dishes to wash at the end of the day
- Less clothes to wash, dry and put away
- Less time picking up stuff from the floor
- Less time to clean the house
- More time to read books again
- More time to spend time with my husband.
Get detailed and have this list on hand so when you feel demotivated, read it and it will help you find that motivation so as to have all these benefits you have written down.

TIP FOUR
Make it a fun task to do. This could mean that you play music while decluttering or maybe invite a friend or relative to come by and be your motivation. Make a coffee or tea or something stronger and have them just be there with you while decluttering.
Find an accountability partner who is also decluttering so that you can motivate each other. This could be done remotely too. So, each person declutters their home while on zoom or skype with you.
TIP FIVE
Congratulate yourself for doing a job well done and maybe reward yourself with a nice bath or time with friends or family. Just don’t reward yourself with buying anything as this will just add to your clutter.
Maybe if you write a few rewards down then you can choose which one you do once you finish your task. This way it will keep you motivated to do the next declutter too.

WHICH WILL YOU CHOOSE?
No matter which of these tips you choose you need to practice these motivation tips in order to slowly make it a habit of decluttering. It is not impossible but it does require work on your behalf.
